Bashkortostan is uniquely located in the midst of two great civilizations – European and Asian. It is a intersection of many ancient trade routes. Some of them are traced from the time of Genghis Khan and Ivan the Terrible. It has always been a melting pot for the views and traditions.

There are three major ethnicity that live there: Bashkirs, Tatars and Russians. All three are equally represented. On the spiritual scale, Bashkirs and Tatars are Sunny Muslims while Russians mostly adhere to the Orthodox branch of Christianity.

This place bears some scars put by the seventy years of the Soviet rule. It is especially seen in the spiritual life the country. All believes were almost exterminated during this time of history except of Communism. Many mosques and temples were demolished in that time.
